Barcelona land Espanyol’s star goalkeeper Joan García in long-term deal

In a calculated and high-impact move, FC Barcelona have completed the signing of Joan García, the standout goalkeeper from cross-town rivals Espanyol. The club activated the 24-year-old’s €25 million release clause and handed him a six-year contract that will keep him at Camp Nou until June 2031.

García enjoyed a stellar 2024–25 campaign, leading La Liga in saves and playing every minute of the season. At just 24, he already boasts Olympic gold with Spain’s U-23 side and is widely regarded as one of the most promising goalkeepers in Europe. His arrival strengthens Barcelona’s defensive core with both youth and proven quality.

With García’s addition, Barcelona now have four senior goalkeepers on the books — raising questions about the futures of veterans Marc-André ter Stegen and Wojciech Szczesny, as well as Iñaki Peña. As the club navigates La Liga’s strict financial rules, more changes between the posts could be imminent.
