At just 29 years old, Princess Bright has been sworn in as the Mayor of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, becoming the youngest mayor in UK history and marking a historic achievement for both British politics and the global Nigerian community.
Her inauguration took place on Friday, May 16, 2025, celebrated as a moment of pride and inspiration.
In her inaugural speech, Bright expressed deep gratitude, stating,
Born to Nigerian parents in the UK, Bright’s rise is not only a personal accomplishment but also a reflection of the growing influence of Nigerians in global public service.
Her mother, Dr. Councillor Afolasade Bright, previously served as Civic Mayor of Hackney from 2006 to 2007, and her father, Pastor Gbolahan Bright MBE, is a senior minister in the Redeemed Christian Church of God.
Bright’s political journey began early—she was elected as a councillor at the age of 22. Over the past seven years, she has passionately championed causes like youth empowerment, social inclusion, and local economic development.
Her commitment to service is deeply rooted in her family’s legacy of public service and community impact.
