The professional wrestling community is in mourning following the sudden passing of Terry Brunk, better known by his ring name Sabu, at the age of 60. Renowned for his high-risk, hardcore wrestling style, Sabu was a pivotal figure in the 1990s Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) scene and later competed in WWE, TNA, and various international promotions.
Sabu’s final match took place on April 18, 2025, during WrestleMania weekend, where he faced Joey Janela in a no-ropes barbed wire match. His last public appearance was at the Tri-State Wrestling Alliance reunion at Philadelphia’s historic 2300 Arena, formerly known as the ECW Arena.
WWE issued a statement expressing their condolences: “WWE is saddened to learn that Terry Brunk, known to wrestling fans as Sabu, has passed away.” All Elite Wrestling (AEW) also paid tribute, stating, “From barbed wire battles to unforgettable high-risk moments, Sabu gave everything to professional wrestling.”
Fellow wrestlers have shared heartfelt tributes. Taz, a longtime friend and colleague, said, “I would not have had the career that I have had if it wasn’t for Sabu. That man got me over, and he didn’t have to get me over, and he did.” Rob Van Dam, another ECW alumnus, honored Sabu with a simple yet poignant gesture on social media, posting an emoji of an index finger pointing upward, a nod to Sabu’s signature pose.
Sabu’s legacy as a pioneer of hardcore wrestling and his influence on the sport will be remembered by fans and fellow wrestlers alike.
