The Christian Aid and Cooperazione Internationale with support funding from the European Union has flagged off two days workshop for journalists in Sokoto on disaster reduction and social safety (DRaSS).
Given reasons for the training, the organizers said it was geared towards educating the media as critical stakeholders to help enlighten the public on how to mitigate
unforseen disasters.
And to adequately know how to prepare for probable disaster, the workshop Facilitator, Mr Kingsley appealed to Nigerians to always adhere to early warning signs (EWS) which are usually given periodically by professionals.
The EWS for flood according to Kingsley could be monitored using both the Geographic Information System and the Hydro Meteorological Data.
Continuing, he said adequate knowledge of these data could lead to forcasting High, Moderate and Probable flood risk areas for each year, adding however, that, the relevant agencies need the media to help pass across the message to risk prone communities.
The organizers also urge the media to help rebuild the confidence of the public in the various agencies saddled with the responsibilities of responding to disasters.
