Ahead of the 2027 general elections, an All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA aspirant for the Anambra Central Senatorial District, Prof. Jerry Ugokwe, has assured his people of an impactful representation if elected, vowing also to “restore legislative excellence and accountability, sponsoring bills that promote transparency and fiscal responsibility.”
Ugokwe, a Professor of Governance and Legislative Studies, is confident that his experience and expertise will drive positive change in the Senate.
In a statement issued at the weekend and made available to our correspondent in Abuja, the aspirant, who was a member of the House of Representatives from 1999-2003, further outlined his plans to include promoting access to information through legislation.
He also promised to digitalize the legislative process, publishing voting records, committee reports, and public hearings online.
Ugokwe, who informed that over 60% of Anambra Central’s population is under 35, added that youth empowerment and job creation would equally be given top priorities for him, while also focusing on advancing education and human capital development, attracting the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETFund and Universal Basic Education Commission, UBEC projects for schools in the zone.
Describing legislature as the heartbeat of democracy, he lamented that public confidence has declined due to gaps between constituents and lawmakers, promising to strengthen oversight mechanisms, ensuring every kobo of federal government’s spending in Anambra Central delivers visible results.
According to him, studies show that only 27% of Nigerians believe legislators effectively represent their constituencies, highlighting the need for change.
The statement further pledged that “the former diplomat will convene the Anambra Central Legislative Accountability Forum every quarter to brief citizens on his work at the Senate,” and also strengthen infrastructure and community development, bringing federal projects to the region.
“Ugokwe is committed to promoting women’s inclusion and social welfare, advocating for gender equality and protection bills.
“He will create a women’s empowerment fund for micro-businesses and rural cooperatives, supporting healthcare access for mothers, widows, and elderly women,” the statement revealed.
The aspirant listed other priorities to include enhancing security and peace-building, health, environment, and sustainable development as well as engaging with the diaspora, fostering global partnerships to benefit Anambra Central.
